Congressman Nadler Questions GSA Head on Constitutionality of Trump Hotel Lease

Today, during a House Transportation & Infrastructure Subcommittee hearing with the Acting Administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA), Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) questioned the GSA head on the constitutionality of payments by foreign governments to the Trump Organization through its Trump Hotel at the Old Post Office Building in Washington, D.C. – a property being leased from the federal government. GSA is the agency that oversees and leases all federal buildings and properties, and therefore is responsible for ensuring all leasing actions comply with the U.S. Constitution.

“The GSA has admitted it doesn’t know if the President’s lease for Trump Hotel is constitutional, and cannot be sure the lease does not violate the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution,” said Congressman Nadler. “When I pressed him, the Acting Administrator would not say if the GSA had looked into the matter. While the President of the United States is directly profiting from payments by foreign governments, we must insist on full transparency. We cannot let-up on holding the Trump Administration accountable because this is not business as usual!“
