Congressman Nadler Joins Rep. Meng and Other NYC Members to Introduce Bill to Boost College Completion

Community College Student Success Act is modeled after CUNY program that provides additional support for students in higher education.

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) joined Representative Grace Meng (NY-06) and other New York City House Democrats in introducing the Community College Student Success Act, a bill modeled after the City University of New York’s (CUNY’s) Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) that will help ensure students complete their higher education in a timely and affordable manner. The Community College Student Success Act will remove barriers to completion by providing students with academic, financial, and personal support to compete their degrees such as access to tutoring, childcare, transportation, and course materials.

“The City University of New York calls itself an ‘American Dream Machine,’ and CUNY’s students are seeing their dreams come true every day,” said Congressman Nadler. “CUNY’s Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) has shown incredible results in making sure students can reach that American dream; under the program, graduation rates for CUNY associate programs have doubled and transfers to four-year programs have increased 47 percent. Now, with the Community College Student Success Act, community college students across the country will have access to similar programs and will see their own dreams coming true. I am thrilled to see the incredible work CUNY has been doing for years recognized in this legislation, and I cannot wait to see what students in New York and around the country will achieve with the degrees this legislation will help them achieve.”

This bill is part of House Democrats’ legislative campaign, Aim Higher, policy solutions to make higher education work for all students and their families. Reps. Meng, José Serrano (NY-15), Nydia Velázquez (NY-07), Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), Yvette Clarke (NY-09), Jerrold Nadler (NY-10), and Carolyn Maloney (NY-12) introduced this bill.
