Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), the representative of Ground Zero and House sponsor of H.R. 2882, the National September 11 Memorial and Museum Act of 2011, hailed the announcement by Governors Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) and Chris Christie (R-NJ) supporting federal funding for the 9/11 Memorial.  The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Act of 2011, which was introduced in September 2011, would provide ongoing federal funds and oversight to the National September 11 Memorial and Museum – the official 9/11 Memorial at Ground Zero – and designate the Memorial and Museum as part of the U.S. Department of the Interior’s national system.  Nadler, who has pushed for a federal role in the Memorial for several years, hopes to generate critical funding on a permanent basis – up to $20 million per fiscal year.  Senator Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii) introduced identical legislation in the Senate.

Nadler issued the following statement:

“I thank Governors Cuomo and Christie for their critical support of our efforts to provide federal funding and oversight for the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.  As I have asserted since the Memorial was conceived, it is important that it be a part of our national network of memorials and monuments.  Our legislation would ensure that the Memorial is available to all who wish to pay their respects and learn about the profound tragedy of 9/11.  I will continue to work with my colleagues in government to safeguard this precious repository of American history, struggle, and triumph.”
