Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), one of the most outspoken proponents of civil rights and liberties protections, was today named the Ranking Democrat on the Constitution Subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee.
The Constitution subcommittee has jurisdiction over all proposed constitutional amendments, and deals with such issues as constitutional rights, federal civil rights laws, abortion, gay rights, and government ethics.
“I am truly honored to represent the Democratic Party on one of the most critical subcommittees in the House of Representatives,” said Rep. Nadler. “I look forward to working with [Subcommittee Chairman] Steve Chabot on many issues, as well as some vigorous debate with him on issues concerning our Constitutional rights.”
“I believe that by serving in this position, I will be in a better position to represent the civil rights and civil liberties concerns of my very diverse district in New York,” he added.
Rep. Nadler has served in Congress since 1992. He represents the 8th Congressional District of New York, which includes parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn. In addition to the Judiciary Committee, he also serves on the Committee on Transportation.
