Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) applauded key progress, announced by Borough President Scott Stringer, on NYU’s 2031 expansion plan on the superblocks in Greenwich Village.  But, he asserted the need for continued discussions between NYU, community stakeholders and elected officials to ensure a final proposal that will meet NYU’s needs without overwhelming the surrounding neighborhood.

Nadler issued the following statement:

“I applaud the progress in drafting a compromise on the scope of NYU’s development in Greenwich Village as part of its 2031 expansion plan.  Borough President Scott Stringer has secured important gains addressing serious community concerns about the scale of the development and its impact on the neighborhood.  I thank NYU for engaging in these productive conversations.  However, there is still significant work to be done to make this proposal more appropriate to the surrounding area.  NYU must continue to find ways to better fit the proposed expansion into the fabric of the Village.

“Additionally, it is critical that NYU work to ensure that 505 LaGuardia – the Mitchell-Lama cooperative housing development on the southern superblock – remains permanently affordable.  I call on NYU to work with 505 LaGuardia to transfer ownership of the land on which the building sits to the cooperative itself, so that this housing development maintains its affordability in perpetuity.

“I look forward to continued discussions to develop a final proposal that meets the needs of NYU’s growth without overwhelming the Village and the community that calls it home.”
