Nadler Stands with House to Demand New Direction for Iraq

Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-08), a member of the Out of Iraq Caucus, today joined with the House of Representatives to pass H.R. 3956, the Responsible Redeployment from Iraq Act. The bill changes America’s direction in Iraq by requiring a redeployment of American troops within 120 days of enactment and was adopted on a vote of 223 to 201.

"I believe we are caught in the middle of a sectarian civil war in Iraq we can neither settle nor win, and a civil war in which it is unclear which side – if any – we should wish to win," said Rep. Nadler. "As long as our troops remain, they will be regarded as an occupation force – and will be attacked by all sides. The foolish policies of the last four years have made a bad outcome in Iraq inevitable. But there is no reason why American troops should continue to die in Iraq’s civil war."

"President Bush must end his failed ‘more of the same’ policies in Iraq," Rep. Nadler added. "Even the White House admits the Iraqi government has failed to meet political and economic benchmarks. Every day we continue the President’s war in Iraq is another day that we waste American blood and treasure. The American people and even members of his own party openly doubt the reasons for our continued presence in Iraq. I urge President Bush to listen to the American people and those in Congress who so clearly demand a new direction in Iraq."
