WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Representatives Jerrold Nadler (NY-12) released the following statement on President Trump's dangerous plan to unlawfully dismantle the Department of Education: 

"Donald Trump is recklessly jeopardizing America's children and families with his dangerous plan to dismantle the Department of Education," said Congressman Jerrold Nadler. "This plan will have devastating consequences for students and teachers, undermine special education, and leave our communities in turmoil. If Trump's outrageous proposal is not stopped, we will face school budget cuts, larger class sizes, and shocking reductions in civil rights protections for students. Moreover, while the Administration pretends to care about antisemitism, by dismantling the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights, Trump is crippling the very office that safeguards Jewish students from discrimination at a time when such protections are desperately needed. The Department of Education was established by Congress in 1979, and Trump has no legitimate authority to dismantle it. I am committed to fighting against his shameful plan with every tool at my disposal."
