Nadler Statement Opposing "Blank Check" Continuing Resolution to Musk and Trump
Washington,
March 11, 2025
Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-12) announced his opposition to the Republican Continuing Resolution (CR), citing its failure to protect critical funding and its enablement of unchecked executive overreach that jeopardizes American families, veterans, and federal workers.
The Republican CR recklessly slashes $13 billion from nondefense programs and services—undermining initiatives that support American families—while irresponsibly increasing defense spending by $6 billion compared to fiscal year 2024 enacted levels.
"This Continuing Resolution is not a 'clean CR'—it’s a Republican-led surrender of Congress's power of the purse and a green light for Donald Trump and Elon Musk to continue their reckless and harmful actions," said Congressman Nadler."The American people deserve a funding bill that tackles rising costs, safeguards essential services, and reinforces the integrity of our federal government—not this dangerous CR that slashes critical programs and abandons veterans, survivors of domestic violence, seniors, families with disabilities, and other vulnerable communities."
The CR also creates uncertainty for critical infrastructure projects, like those under the Capital Investment Grants program. Without clear Congressional direction, vital projects like New York City’s Second Avenue Subway Phase 2 risk being sidelined, with discretionary decisions left to the USDOT and the administration.
Moreover, the CR slashes the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program at the Department of Defense by 57%—a drastic cut that will severely impact research on health issues affecting military personnel and veterans. This includes studies on prostate and breast cancer, PTSD, and biomarkers for illnesses impacting Gulf War veterans. Such a cut not only hinders scientific advancement but also jeopardizes the well-being of those who have served our nation.
Additionally, the bill does not include a bipartisan proposal to avert payment cuts to doctors who treat Medicare patients. If Congress doesn’t take action to reverse the 2.8% cut to physicians that went into effect in January, doctors could be forced to close their practices, further reducing access to care.
Republicans have also quietly inserted language into the CR to block any congressional vote on President Trump's incredibly harmful tariffs on Canada and Mexico. This is a blatant attempt to shield these harmful trade policies from democratic scrutiny and avoid accountability for decisions that are hurting American consumers and businesses.
Yesterday, Congressman Nadler took action to challenge many of the harmful provisions of the CR by sponsoring or cosponsoring three critical amendments:
Republicans rejected every amendment.
“This dangerous Republican CR is not about fiscal responsibility—it's about enabling chaos and undermining the services that Americans rely upon," concluded Congressman Nadler. "Veterans will lose access to essential care and housing. Federal employees will continue to be unfairly targeted and terminated. Critical infrastructure projects and social services will now hang in the balance, subject to political whims. This isn't a funding bill—it's an attack on the very programs Americans depend on. I will proudly stand against the CR by voting no.” |
