Congressman Nadler Statement on Passage of President Biden’s Build Back Better Act

Washington, DC - Today House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued the following statement in response to the House passage of President Biden’s Build Back Better Act. This legislation fulfills President Biden’s promise to deliver a once-in-a-generation investment to lower the everyday costs that burden working families – health care, housing, childcare, education, and more. For New Yorkers, this legislation would cut taxes, safeguard clean air and water for future generations, and help working parents access care and education for their children.

The Build Back Better Act will:

·     Cut taxes and reduce the most burdensome expenses for New York families by establishing Paid Family and Medical Leave, passing the largest expansion of the Affordable Care Act in a decade, slashing the cost of prescription drugs, expanding rental assistance and affordable housing, and finally addressing the unfair SALT Deduction caps;

·     Extend tax credits to working families by providing up to $1,500 in tax cuts for 982,700 low-wage workers in New York by extending the American Rescue Plan’s Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) expansion and the Biden Child Tax Credit for 35 million families;

·     Deliver the largest investment in child care and education in history by providing access to child care for 1,079,596 young children (ages 0-5) per year and providing high quality, universal free preschool to more than 300,000 children per year, expanding access to free school meals, and increasing maximum Pell Grant awards;

·     Address the looming threat of climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions by more than 50%, investing in climate resiliency measures to protect New Yorkers from the impacts of the climate crisis, and creating a Civilian Climate Corps which will employ diverse generations of New Yorkers.

“The Build Back Better Act will deliver transformational change for New York City and our nation. This historic legislation will ensure that our workers and families are no longer held back by high costs or lack of access. For too long, we have failed to invest properly in everyday people. Instead, we have allowed big corporations and the wealthy to access all the resources this nation has to offer without paying their fair share. That stops now. By passing President Biden’s agenda into law, we have set our nation on a course to meet its climate goals, create millions of good-paying jobs, relieve working families struggling to afford the growing costs of raising children, and grow our economy. The Build Back Better Act finally unlocks the full potential of New York families, while also obligating the wealthiest and corporations to finally pay their fair share.”
