After seven years of bombast, Republicans have nothing to show for their empty promises of repeal, but hundreds of Republican Members of Congress have shown a shocking willingness to play politics with people’s lives and to hurt American families.
Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued the following statement on the Senate GOP’s failed “skinny” health care repeal vote:
“Last night’s vote in the Senate has apparently put in an end to congressional Republicans’ relentless campaign to repeal the Affordable Care Act and strip millions of Americans of affordable, comprehensive health insurance. After seven years of bombast, Republicans have nothing to show for their empty promises of repeal, but hundreds of Republican Members of Congress have shown a shocking willingness to play politics with people’s lives and to hurt American families.
“We must applaud Senator John McCain’s decisive vote, and we must also acknowledge Senator Susan Collins and Senator Lisa Murkowski, who have stood strong against these horrible bills for weeks even amid threats from members of their own party. But it was not just the Senators who voted last night who deserve the credit. This moment of victory and immense relief is a tribute to every single person who called their Senator and Member of Congress, who wrote letters and op-eds, who attended protests, and who shared information on social media. Their work shined a bright light on the cruelty of the House and Senate repeal bills and highlighted the hypocrisy inherent in the process.
“We will continue to fight. We will continue to resist any effort to undermine the protections, coverage, and policies of the Affordable Care Act. I look forward to working with all of my colleagues in a bipartisan manner to improve the law and to keep building towards a health care policy that covers all Americans. Let’s move forward together and leave the empty threat of repeal behind.”
