Nadler Disappointed by President’s Decision to Try Guantanamo Detainees Before Military Commissions
Washington, DC,
March 8, 2011
Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, issued the following statement in response to President Obama’s planned resumption of military tribunals for terrorism suspects at the U.S. base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba:
“I am disappointed that President Obama has decided to resume trying terrorism suspects detained in Guantanamo Bay before military commissions. I continue to believe that the detention facility at Guantanamo is a blot on our national honor, and that we should try any terrorist suspects as we always have successfully: before the civilian courts of the United States. Unfortunately, despite the objections of some of us, Congress has foreclosed that time-tested option through legislation prohibiting bringing detainees to the United States to stand trial. As a result, the Administration has turned to the legally dubious military commissions to try these suspects. It is unworthy of this great nation.”
