Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), representative of Ground Zero and Lower Manhattan, and long-time advocate of the victims of 9/11, introduced a bipartisan bill to create an official 9/11 commemorative coin. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center Commemorative Coin Act of 2009 would authorize a $1 coin to be minted in 2011 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks and establish the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center site.

“A 9/11 commemorative coin is a simple but powerful way to mark the 10th anniversary of the attack on our nation and simultaneously support the World Trade Center Memorial,” said Nadler. “These coins will honor the courage and sacrifice of those who perished in the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and recognize the bravery of those who risked their lives to save others on that day.”

The coins will be priced at $10 each, with proceeds supporting operations and maintenance of the World Trade Center Memorial and Museum. They will be inscribed with the words, “Always Remember.” The bill also includes language noting the sense of the Congress that the Treasury Secretary direct approximately one-half of the coins to be minted in the U.S. Mint in West Point, New York and half to be minted at the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
