Nadler Lauds Expansion of Federal Aid to Brooklyn Post-Hurricane Irene

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) thanked the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for extending eligibility for aid to individual property owners and certain non-profit organizations affected by Hurricane Irene in Brooklyn.  Kings County residents are now eligible to apply to FEMA for federal aid to cover damages to their property incurred from the storm.

Nadler had previously called for a broader Emergency Disaster Declaration that would make Kings County eligible for Individual Assistance and Public Assistance after Irene.

“I am glad that FEMA recognized that property owners, infrastructure and institutions in Kings County incurred damages as a result of Hurricane Irene and are, therefore, eligible to apply for aid,” said Nadler.  “Especially in Brooklyn, the storm caused flooding and downed trees throughout many neighborhoods, and I have heard from a number of constituents who were adversely affected.  Now they have a pathway towards rebuilding after the storm.”

Additionally, both Kings and New York Counties are eligible for Public Assistance from FEMA.  Those eligible for Public Assistance include state and local governments and certain private nonprofit organizations.

All potential applicants for Public Assistance are invited to an applicant briefing to take place on Friday, September 16, at 165 Cadman Plaza East, Brooklyn, at 10:00am and 1:00 pm.  To find out more about eligibility for Individual Assistance, or to register, property owners can call FEMA’s toll-free number at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or go online to www.disasterassistance.gov.
