Nadler Opposes Defense Appropriations for Funding of Afghanistan War
Washington, DC,
December 16, 2009
Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) reiterated his opposition to the escalation of the U.S. war in Afghanistan and voted against the FY 2010 Department of Defense Appropriations Act, which includes $100 billion in war funding.
Nadler released the following statement: “Though the Defense appropriations legislation which passed the House today contains numerous provisions and programs of which I am strongly in favor, I could not in good conscience support this bill, as it provides $100 billion in continued war funding. I am strongly opposed to the President’s planned escalation of warfare in Afghanistan, and I am concerned that an already prolonged war will continue into the foreseeable future. Rather than continue to expand our massive efforts to prop up the corrupt government of Afghanistan, we need a smaller, more focused mission aimed more directly at the terrorists themselves. This bill fails to change direction in Afghanistan and, for that reason, I could not support it.” |
