Nadler Statement on the 9/11 Commission Report

Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) today made the following statement on the 9/11 Commission report:

"I commend the Commission for its excellent work, leadership, and service to our country. The Congress must immediately take action to carry out the recommendations made by the Commission as we move forward in our war on terror.

"The Commission concluded that we are not safe today. Sadly, we are not making the progress we should be making to defend ourselves from future attacks. Osama bin Laden is still at large, first responders aren't getting the funding they need to meet new security threats, the security of our infrastructure must be improved, and law enforcement must be given the information it needs to keep us safe.

"I am pleased that the Commission agrees with my assessment that federal funding for emergency preparedness must be based on risk and vulnerability, and that New York City should be given priority status in this regard. The House Judiciary Committee recently passed an amendment I introduced that will improve how federal homeland security grants are allocated to ensure that areas most vulnerable to attack get the resources they need to combat terrorism. Homeland security decisions must not fall victim to pork-barrel spending, and we must adhere to the Commission's advice to ensure that this no longer occurs.

"I look forward to working with my fellow members of Congress to address the Commission's recommendations. My hope is that the Republican leadership agrees that we must work now to establish the Commission's recommendations, and that Speaker Hastert will reconsider his remarks from earlier this week, when he said that Congress will be unlikely to consider any major changes this year. We cannot afford to wait to do what must be done to protect us. At the very least, we owe it to the families of the victims of 9/11 to address the Commission's recommendations immediately."
