Conyers, Nadler Statement Against President Trump’s Attacks on Judiciary Following 9th Circuit Judge Ruling “Sanctuary Cities” Order as Unconstitutional
Today, House Judiciary Committee Ranking Member John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet, released a joint statement following President Donald Trump’s threats against the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals after Judge William Orrick III ruled the President’s “sanctuary cities” executive order unlawful.
“Once again, President Trump would rather attack the judiciary than defend his inhumane and unconstitutional executive orders. The President still hasn’t learned that he is his own worst enemy in federal court, as his own words and those of his associates have again been used as evidence against him. The Muslim ban is unconstitutional, the so-called ‘sanctuary cities’ order is unlawful, and the path forward on these issues does not involve recycling a tired proposal to dismantle the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. That is not how things work. The Judiciary is a separate and equal branch of our government, and the President cannot manipulate the federal courts in order to achieve the political ends he seeks.”
