Rep. Nadler Salutes Passage of Economic Recovery Bill

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-08) lauded the passage of H.R. 1, the American Economic Recovery and Reinvestment Plan, which was approved in the House of Representatives by a vote of 244 to 188. This legislation is essential for immediately reinvigorating the economy before it sinks deeper into a genuine, prolonged depression. This $819 billion Plan will create three to four million jobs, fund unemployment insurance, education, Medicaid, food stamps and critical public works and infrastructure projects around the country.
“Though I still believe that a much larger stimulus package is necessary to truly prevent our economy’s descent toward a bona fide depression, I am very gratified that we could make this productive start toward stemming job loss and economic collapse,” said Rep. Nadler. “Without this economic recovery package, our economy certainly would stand little chance of improving any time soon. I commend President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and the House Leadership for making this possible.”

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan includes tax cuts, funding for aid to states and localities, funding for infrastructure projects, and increased unemployment benefits. It will double production of renewable energy and rebuild aging, unsafe infrastructure and schools around the county. A version of this Plan will soon come to a vote in the Senate before the two bills can be conferenced in order to meet President Obama’s planned deadline of February 13.
