Town Hall Meeting on What to Expect From the New Administration

Since November, many have been asking questions as to the implications of the Trump presidency, his administration and top government appointments, as well as the legislative priorities for the new Congress. On December 19, 2016, I organized a town hall meeting, joined by experts from local advocacy and non-governmental organizations, at New York University.

Senator Sessions Must Demonstrate Ability to Hold the President-elect Accountable Over Conflicts of Interest
Ahead of the Senate confirmation hearings, I sent a letter to Members of the Senate Judiciary Committee urging them to question Senator Jeff Sessions, who President-elect Donald Trump nominated for Attorney General, on, what I believe, are the President-elect's conflicts of interest and possible violations of the Constitution. As potentially the top law enforcement officer and head of the Justice Department, Senator Sessions should make clear how he intends to address these outstanding concerns over the President-elect's business conflicts and guarantee compliance with the law.
As I said in my letter, without the President-elect taking the necessary steps to provide transparency and separate himself from any potential ethical misconduct, I believe we cannot be certain that American interests are safe from subjugation or subversion. Therefore, I believe it is vital that we be assured the Department of Justice, which is charged with investigating conflicts of interest and enforcing the laws that prohibit them, has complete independence in this matter, and is able and willing to be aggressive in rooting-out any such corruption.
Cutting Regulations Means Putting Health and Safety in Jeopardy

The drive to gut regulations protecting public safety has reached a new and dangerous low. Recently, the House majority voted to undermine what I believe is the government's ability to protect Americans from disasters at nuclear power plants. They did so by rejecting my amendment, which would have protected safety rules proposed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) from this slash-and-burn regulatory philosophy.
Impeding the NRC’s ability to regulate nuclear plants could threaten countless lives. Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant, which New York State just announced will be closed by 2021, lies less than 30 miles from New York City. Indian Point also sits near two fault lines, and, according to the NRC, is the most likely nuclear power plant in the country to experience core damage due to an earthquake. Now is not the time to undermine nuclear safety and the common-sense regulations that keep us safe and protect our way of life.
