Hurricane Sandy Recovery – Repairing Our Parks

Along with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, I am pleased that the city will receive more than $2.8 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The funding will help repair damage caused by Superstorm Sandy to Fort Washington Park, Sakura Park, Riverside Park, and Riverside Park South.

Even though it has been more than three years, the after effects of Superstorm Sandy continue to affect our daily lives. We have been unable to fully enjoy the city’s recreational facilities due to lingering damage from the storm. This federal funding will help to fully repair the buildings, trails, and fields of our park system in order to return it to its pre-Sandy state.

After the repairs are completed, you will once again have access to all of the park system’s open spaces and will be able to enjoy the temporary refuge they provide from the hectic pace of city life. I am proud of the resiliency that New York has shown in the face of adversity and I will continue to work to ensure the city has the resources to complete our recovery.
