After Trump Jr. Meeting Revelations, DOJ Must Answer Questions Regarding Russian Attorney

Following recent allegations that the president's campaign met with a Russian government-affiliated attorney in June 2016 who was also involved in a Russian money laundering case that the Department of Justice settled in May 2017. I joined all Democratic Members of the House Judiciary Committee in sending a letter to Attorney General Sessions requesting answers to the many troubling questions surrounding this case and its settlement.

Fighting for Transparency & Fairness Related to the President's Hotel

Last week, I questioned the Acting Administrator of the General Services Administration (GSA), Tim Horne, about payments by foreign governments to the Trump Organization through its hotel at the Old Post Office Building in a property being leased from the federal government. The GSA is responsible for ensuring its actions, and any leases entered into, comply with our laws and with the U.S. Constitution. Yet, Mr. Horne admitted the GSA doesn’t know if the lease for Trump Hotel is legal, nor can they be sure the lease does not violate the Emoluments Clause of the Constitution. When pressed, the Acting Administrator would not even say if the GSA had looked into the matter.

Reexamining the War on Terror and Closing Guantanamo Bay

Last week, I again sponsored an amendment on the House floor that would make it easier to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility. Many of the detainees currently held at Gitmo are being detained indefinitely without charge or trial, which is an affront to the fundamental American values of justice and due process. Beyond serving as a recruiting tool for terrorists and damaging our relationships with allies, Gitmo costs taxpayers $445 million per year–or $10 million per detainee–making it the most expensive prison in the world. Even though my amendment was defeated, you can rest assured that I will continue my fight to close Guantanamo Bay.
