Nadler Cheers Reopening of Statue of Liberty’s Crown

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-08) applauded the decision by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar to reopen the crown of the Statue of Liberty, which is located in Nadler’s congressional district, to the public on July 4th. The National Park Service had closed the crown after September 11, 2001 because of safety concerns. The Service has now studied the issue and taken steps to improve safety.

“We cannot discount the symbolic importance of the Statue of Liberty for New Yorkers, for Americans and, indeed, for the world,” remarked Nadler. “The profound effect of seeing this great Statue as you approach or gaze into New York Harbor, and the unmitigated thrill of climbing to the top of her crown, is part of the quintessential New York experience. I send thanks to Secretary Salazar for his decision to reopen the crown, which will soon allow visitors from near and far to once again climb to great heights overlooking the Harbor.”
