Chelsea Elected Officials Laud USPS Decision Not to Sell Old Chelsea Post Office
New York, NY,
November 26, 2013
Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, City Council Speaker Christine C. Quinn, Borough President Scott Stringer, State Senator Brad Hoylman, and Assembly Members Richard Gottfried and Deborah Glick issued the following joint statement on the recent developments around the United Stated Postal Service’s (USPS) proposal to sell the Old Chelsea Post Office at 217 West 18th Street in Manhattan and relocate its services to another facility: “As representatives of the community served by the Old Chelsea Post Office, we are extremely pleased that USPS has withdrawn its plans to sell this facility. When our offices and the community first learned of the proposed sale earlier this year, we advocated strongly for the continuation of services at the Old Chelsea Post Office and for increased transparency and a robust public process before USPS took any further action. “After many calls on USPS, we were successful in obtaining a public meeting and extended comment period, during which many area residents voiced their concerns about the proposed move and outrage about the lack of transparency in USPS’s decision making. We are thankful that after the completion of the public review process, USPS has taken the important concerns into consideration and is now exploring options that do not include selling off this historic community asset, such as re-purposing underutilized space in the building. We will continue to monitor USPS’s future actions regarding the Old Chelsea Post Office in order to protect vital mail services for our constituents.” ### |
