Nadler Statement on Mayor Eric Adams

NEW YORK, NY - Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler issued the following statement:

"In September, I was one of the first elected officials to call for Mayor Adams to resign after the charges against him were made public by the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York because I was concerned it could affect his ability to govern. Every individual, no matter who they are, is guaranteed due process under the law and is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, I feared the Mayor would no longer be able to govern effectively given these legal challenges.

We have since learned that the Trump Administration has promised to drop the charges against the Mayor but reserves the right to renew them at any time. This is an impossible position for the Mayor and for our City because it makes the Mayor beholden to the Trump Administration. We cannot have a compromised Mayor who is beholden to the President.

The U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY refused to drop the charges and resigned in protest. In addition, seven other Justice Department prosecutors also resigned after refusing to carry out what is clearly an improper request. Then, yesterday, we learned that four Deputy Mayors have announced that they cannot continue and will resign because of the Mayor’s actions. This underscores the seriousness of the improper quid pro quo and clearly demonstrates that Mayor Adams has lost his ability to lead the City of New York effectively.

I reiterate my call for Mayor Adams to resign or be removed from office."
