New York, N.Y. — Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) issued the following statement in response to the New York Police Department (NYPD) Deputy Commissioner of Trials' recommendation that officer Daniel Pantaleo, who used an illegal chokehold leading to the death of Eric Garner, be fired:
"The recommendation by the Deputy Commissioner of Trials to fire Officer Daniel Pantaleo for the reckless use of a chokehold in the death of Eric Garner gives Police Commissioner O’Neill the opportunity to demonstrate that accountability measures exist within the NYPD and to begin the process of providing closure for communities impacted by this tragic event. Though the Garner family may have been denied justice in the courts, Commissioner O’Neill’s ultimate decision to dismiss Officer Pantaleo would demonstrate that the NYPD can police itself and ensure that the people of New York can count on the fact that our law enforcement officers will be held to highest standards. After a five year wait since the death of Mr. Garner, I hope that he will not further delay his decision to see that justice is served."
