Congressman Nadler Statement on Supreme Court Decision Upholding ACA in King v. Burwell
Washington, DC,
June 25, 2015
“The Affordable Care Act will now take its place alongside Medicare and Social Security as a fundamental pillar of American security”
Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (NY-10), senior member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement following the Supreme Court ruling in King v. Burwell to uphold health insurance subsidies using the federal exchange. “Today is a victory for hardworking Americans as families across this country no longer have to fear being left without health coverage. The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in King v. Burwell affirms that affordable healthcare will remain available for millions of Americans, regardless of where they live. “This decision is good for American workers and good for the American economy. What was a less than honest attempt by conservatives to strike down the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and eliminate health security for millions of citizens has now been definitively rebuked. Every eligible taxpayer can rest assured that their access to affordable health insurance through the ACA is now assured. “With the Court’s ruling, the ACA will now take its place alongside Medicare and Social Security as a fundamental pillar of American security. Since the law was enacted, more than 16 million Americans have enrolled in affordable, comprehensive health insurance. More than 129 million Americans with pre-existing conditions can no longer be discriminated against or refused coverage, and healthcare spending is rising at a historically slow rate. “The historic progress that began with the ACA must continue, and it is my hope that Republicans will follow the Court’s lead and, rather than waste taxpayer time and money by undermining ACA, work with Democrats to ensure that every American, regardless of where they live, has access to affordable health insurance.”
