Responding to news that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has decided to release up to $4.55 billion for an improved transportation system to replace what was destroyed downtown on Sept 11, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) released the following statement:

"Today's FEMA decision is key in New York's recovery effort.  I have lobbied, along with many of my colleagues, for FEMA to make new expenditures for an improved transportation system, not simply replace the antiquated system that was destroyed by the 9/11 attacks.  Interconnectivity of Manhattan's three economic centers -- Downtown, Midtown, and Midtown West -- is essential as we rebuild, and this money will go a long way to achieving that goal.

I want to commend FEMA for the decision, and for all the work they have done to help New York.  Whether it has been working on new, less restrictive standards for the Mortgage and Rental Assistance Program, or this decision today, FEMA has always listened and responded to my concerns, as well as those of my colleagues.  I look forward to continuing our productive relationship to ensure that all of New York's needs are taken care of in this time."
