Congressman Nadler Applauds Passage of Raise the Wage Act

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) released the following statement on H.R. 582, the Raise the Wage Act, which passed the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday by a vote of 231 to 199. The Raise the Wage Act, which Congressman Nadler proudly cosponsored, will gradually increase the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025.

Below is Rep. Nadler's full statement:

“Yesterday, I was pleased to vote in support of the Raise the Wage Act, which will gradually increase the federal minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2025. The bill will restore the value of work in our nation by increasing wages for up to 33 million American workers and lifting 1.3 million Americans out of poverty. I am especially pleased that over 20 million women will benefit from the Raise the Wage Act, especially women of color who face higher rates of wage discrimination.

“For over 30 years, I have fought to combat poverty and expand opportunities for workers through fair wages, in New York, and across the country. I am proud to have stood on the frontlines with thousands of workers – from car washers to airport employees to fast-food workers – as they fought for a living wage in New York.

“After more than a decade with no increase in the federal minimum wage – the longest period in U.S. history – a pay raise for American workers is long overdue.  It’s unacceptable that millions of Americans working full-time jobs are unable to provide for themselves or their families. I urge the Senate to pass this legislation to ensure every American gets a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work.”
