Rep. Nadler Opposes Trump's Supreme Court Pick

Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) released the following statement in response to the President's selection of Judge Neil Gorsuch to be his nominee to be the next Supreme Court Justice:

"After more than a year of GOP obstruction of President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee – simply because he was nominated by President Obama – the Senate should be in no rush to approve Trump’s nominee without strenuous review and vetting. I urge my colleagues in the Senate to oppose Judge Gorsuch’s nomination until it is clear that he will protect the constitutional rights of women, of the LGBT community, and the rights of every American.  We must be sure he will be faithful to the Constitution, not to promises he may have made to Donald Trump, and will fulfill his duty to act as an independent check against the clear excesses of the executive.

"Judge Gorsuch is Justice Scalia on steroids. His record demonstrates that, if confirmed, he would rely on his conservative, originalist philosophy to overturn critical precedents and to disregard the rights of everyday Americans while bolstering protections for corporations and special interests. Gorsuch is openly hostile to women’s reproductive rights, and has repeatedly opposed the right of women to access cost-free contraception as guaranteed under the Affordable Care Act. He has been harshly critical of those who have turned to the courts to demand their constitutional rights, including the right to marriage equality. Furthermore, he has repeatedly favored corporations at the expense of employees and consumers and, if confirmed, will likely be Wall St.’s best friend on the court."
