Statement of Ranking Member Jerry Nadler in Response to the Supreme Court’s Decision in Garland v. Cargill

Today, Ranking Member Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court's decision in Garland v. Cargill:

"In 2017, a shooter killed 60 people and injured more than 800 when he fired more than 1000 rounds in just 10 minutes at the crowd gathered for the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas, Nevada.  He was able to fire so many rounds so quickly because he used firearms equipped with bump stocks, devices that allow a semiautomatic firearm to fire nearly as fast as a machine gun.  Machine guns have been subject to strict regulation for 90 years.

Last Congress, following mass shootings in Buffalo, New York and Uvalde, Texas, I introduced the Protecting Our Kids Act, a bill that would have taken many lifesaving actions to prevent gun violence—including effectively banning bump stocks.  I was proud to lead the Judiciary Committee in taking swift action to bring the Protecting Our Kids Act to the House Floor where it passed with overwhelming Democratic support. All but five House Republicans voted against this lifesaving legislation.

If we were to send him legislation banning bump stocks, President Biden has promised to sign it.  It appears that only House Republicans are standing in our way. I call on my Republican colleagues to follow our lead last Congress and bring a bill to the Floor to ban these tools of senseless violence.  Given their abysmal record, I expect they will fail to heed this call—but I promise that preventing gun violence be among my highest priorities as Chairman of the Judiciary Committee when Democrats take back the House this fall."
