Nadler Statement on SCOTUS Decision Allowing Racial Gerrymandering

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s decision in Abbott v. Perez, involving racial gerrymandering in Texas:

“On the fifth anniversary of the Shelby County v. Holder decision, the U.S. Supreme Court has again turned a blind eye to minority vote dilution.  Despite earlier findings of intentional discrimination in Republican drafted racial gerrymanders, the actions of this five Justice majority serves to further exclude minority voters from the democratic process. Justice Gorsuch joined Justice Thomas in an extreme concurrence that would invalidate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act for redistricting challenges. This proves that much work remains to be done in order to end voter suppression measures and protect the right to cast an equal ballot for all voters. I will continue to work to strengthen the Voting Rights Act, and call on the Republican Majority to work with us to protect voting rights for all Americans.”
