Nadler Cheers NASA’s Decision to Bring Space Shuttle Enterprise to New York

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) hailed NASA’s decision to display the Space Shuttle Enterprise in New York at the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum.  NASA’s announcement followed months of effort by Nadler and the Intrepid museum to secure one of the Shuttles for New York City.  Early in the process of finding a home for the retiring Shuttles, Nadler wrote to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden to make the case for housing a Shuttle at the Intrepid, which has a long history with the space program.  The letter was signed by both New York Senators and 19 Members of the New York State congressional delegation.

“I am very excited that NASA has chosen the Intrepid as the final resting place for the Space Shuttle Enterprise,” said Nadler.  “The Space Shuttle is a symbol of our nation’s foremost achievement in the exploration of space, and the Intrepid is an ideal location to display this history to the public.  In selecting the Intrepid, NASA ensures that millions of New Yorkers and visitors will be able to experience, first-hand, this most extraordinary expression of American innovation.”

In making its selections, NASA considered applications from institutions across the country vying to host a shuttle.  The Intrepid museum was chosen over many other potential locations for the Shuttles, including the Johnson Space Center in Houston and the Seattle Museum of Flight.

The Intrepid museum, which attracts more than 900,000 visitors annually, is housed on the USS Intrepid, a decommissioned aircraft carrier docked at Pier 86 on West 46th Street, in the heart of Congressman Nadler’s district.
