Nadler Statement on John Conyers

Today, Congressman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), the acting Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, released the following statement after John Conyers, Jr. announced his retirement from Congress effective today:

“John Conyers has been a friend and mentor to me for over 25 years, and I am saddened that his service to our nation has had to end under these circumstances. John has been a champion for justice his entire life, and there is no doubt that these allegations have taken a tremendous toll on him personally, as well as on his family and on everyone that knows him. With that said, there can be no tolerance for behavior that subjects women to the kind of conduct that has been alleged. The strength women have shown in coming forward to tell their stories is part of our country’s progress in moving toward a place of greater respect, tolerance, understanding, and justice for all. That is what we must constantly strive for, with the strength to look at our own failings in defending and promoting these ideals for all Americans. Regardless of age, race, gender, religion, ability, nationality, or sexual orientation, every American should feel safe, should be treated equally, and should have equal access to justice.”
