Nadler: Dubai Divestment is Good News, but Real Threat Remains

Congressman Jerrold Nadler today applauded the decision by Dubai Ports World to scuttle its proposed purchase of American port interests.  The controversial deal met with near-unanimous opposition from Congress and from the American people, and shed light on the ongoing threat posed by uninspected containers arriving at our ports.

Congressman Nadler released the following statement:

“It makes eminent sense that D.P. World decided to pull the plug on the deal.  From the beginning it was clear to everyone but the President that the sale was going nowhere, that Americans want their ports in American hands.

“But the job of securing our ports is far from complete.  When all is said and done, it’s not who owns the port that matters most, but what’s entering the port.  We inspect only a trifling 5 percent of the 11 million containers that enter our ports every year.  For all we know, a nuclear weapon could be hidden in one of the 10.5 million containers that go uninspected.

“It’s imperative that we verify the contents of every container bound for the United States before it arrives on our shores.  Yesterday, Congressman Jim Oberstar and I introduced the S.O.S. Act, a bill mandating that we scan and seal every container.  I firmly believe that we will not be safe until this policy becomes law.”
