Congressman Nadler Blasts Republican Select Panel Investigation of Planned Parenthood as “New McCarthyism”

Jan 21, 2016 Issues: Health Care

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (NY-10) joined the five other Democratic Members of the Republican’s Select Panel to Attack Women’s Health in sending a letter to Chair Marsha Blackburn expressing their concerns about a series of overly-broad document requests that raise serious privacy concerns.  Congressman Nadler, a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee and long-standing advocate for reproductive rights, said:
“I am appalled at the witch-hunt my Republican colleagues have initiated through their select committee. These requests – coming before even holding an organization meeting and which were not shared with the Democrats on the Committee prior to being sent – raise serious privacy concerns. They are so far out-of-bounds that they even seek personal information about medical students, researchers, and patients. I cannot believe that demanding this type of information has any legitimate link to an examination of fetal tissue research or of safe, legal health care in this country. Republicans should acknowledge this committee for what it is – nothing more than a new McCarthyism – which only serves to stoke the flames of extremism around the country.”
