 Historic Sit-In on House Floor

Congressman Jerrold Nadler demanding action on common sense gun legislation during the House Sit-In.

This week I was proud to join civil rights icon, Congressman John Lewis, and my Democratic colleagues in an historic sit-in on the floor of the House to demand a vote on common sense gun legislation to close the gun show loophole and prevent those on the terrorist watch list from purchasing firearms.

The House leadership's refusal to even allow a vote on these proposals led us to take this dramatic action in the wake of the mass shootings at a LGBT club in Orlando and in so many communities across our country.

Rather than allowing a vote, the House leadership turned off the C-SPAN cameras, abruptly adjourned the House in the middle of the night, and left Washington for a week long recess.

We have vowed to keep advocating, keep organizing, and keep fighting until we are able to bring up and pass common sense gun legislation. The stakes are too high for us to do nothing. And I believe we must take even stronger measures to prevent these atrocities including reinstating the Assault Weapon Ban and preventing the sale of large capacity gun clips.
